The National Environment Engineering Institute has found that the Ganga River has spectrum coliphages which have the capacity to destroy many types of coliforms that create diseases. This capacity of Ganga is unique in all rivers of the world. The Kanwad Yatra seeks to carry these coliphages to distinct part of the country by carrying water of the Ganga. These coliphages sticks to sediments of the Ganga River and become active when they sense coliforms around them. However the Tehri dam has arrested the sediments and therefore in the times to come coliphages in the River Ganga will not have a place to live and they will not be found in downstream. At that time the Kanwadiyas would carry empty water to their villages.
