NGT has given a judgment that the boundaries of the Ganga will be demarcated. Under this decision, any of the construction work (bridge, building, mining etc.) will not be done within the 200 meter of the Ganga. And no pollution will be spread in the area of 500 meters.
We respect this decision of NGT, but the question is how will we determine the area of the Ganga? The water spread increases with the increase in water levels. Therefore, the area of the Ganga should be measured from its maximum ever high flood level. If we declare a restricted area of only 200 meters in the present area of the Ganga, then in those areas where the water spreads far and wide during flood times, they will be left out of this arrangement.
The area of high flow level should be declared as a restricted area so that the water can spread freely in future and help in groundwater recharge.
After coming to power, the Prime Minister of India Shri Narendra Modi had said, “Now we do not have to take anything from the Ganga but only to give it”. Welcoming this statement, we urge him that demarcation of the Ganga should be taken with maximum flood levels.
